The Energy Transition in Three Numbers: Record Solar, Record Investment, Stubborn Emissions
Strip the energy debate to three verifiable numbers and the shape of the transition appears. One: solar has become the fastest-deployed energy technology in history, with annual installations setting records year after year on the International Energy Agency's tallies. Two: global investment in clean energy now runs roughly double investment in fossil fuels. Three: energy-related emissions have plateaued near record levels rather than falling.
All three are true at once because the transition is additive before it is substitutive. Booming electricity demand — data centres, air conditioning, electrification itself — means new clean supply has largely been meeting new demand, with displacement of existing fossil generation arriving unevenly, region by region.
Geography explains the rest. Advanced economies' emissions are broadly declining; the growth is concentrated where energy demand is growing fastest, and where coal remains the incumbent. The transition's centre of gravity is therefore Asian grids, not European rooftops.
The bottlenecks now are prosaic: grid connections queue for years, storage must scale to firm variable supply, permitting moves slower than capital, and critical-mineral supply chains concentrate in few hands — every one of them a solvable engineering-and-policy problem rather than a physics problem.
Which is the honest framing of where the world is: the technologies won the cost argument; the build-out is winning the deployment argument; the emissions curve waits on the slowest, least glamorous parts of the system to catch up.
