One Island Prints the World's Advanced Chips. The Map Everyone Is Trying to Redraw

The most sophisticated objects humans make depend on a supply chain with single points of failure. Governments are spending fortunes to change that.

Advanced semiconductors are the only product on earth where the leading edge of manufacturing is concentrated in essentially one place. Taiwan's TSMC fabricates the overwhelming majority of the world's most advanced logic chips; the machines it uses to do so come from a single Dutch company, ASML, whose extreme-ultraviolet lithography tools have no competitor.

The rest of the map is nearly as concentrated: chip design clusters in the United States, memory in South Korea, packaging and testing across Southeast Asia, and critical materials — from photoresists to neon — in a handful of suppliers. It is the most efficient supply chain ever built and one of the least resilient.

That combination explains the money. The US CHIPS Act, the EU Chips Act and parallel programs in Japan, India and the Gulf have committed enormous public subsidies to relocate fabrication, and export controls now govern which chips and tools may cross which borders — turning semiconductors into the first industry openly managed as strategic terrain.

Physics complicates the politics. New fabs cost tens of billions, take years, and still slot into the same web of tools, chemicals and know-how; 'independence' is not on any realistic menu. Diversification — a second source here, a friend-shored plant there — is.

The story runs for decades because AI hardware demand and geopolitical risk are both compounding. Watching where fabs, tools and export rules land is watching the twenty-first century's industrial geography being drawn.
