The Internet Is a Seafloor Technology: Inside the Cable Network That Carries Almost Everything
Nearly all intercontinental data — the common industry estimate runs around 99 percent — travels through submarine fibre-optic cables laid on the ocean floor. Several hundred systems, cumulatively spanning well over a million kilometres, carry finance, cloud computing, video and diplomacy alike. Satellites, for all their visibility, handle a sliver.
The physical reality is startlingly modest: deep-sea cable is about the diameter of a garden hose, armoured only near shore. Faults are routine — anchors and fishing gear cause most of the roughly hundred-plus breaks a year — and a global fleet of specialist repair ships splices them back, a maritime profession the public never sees.
The map has chokepoints like shipping's: cable paths bunch through the Red Sea, the Luzon Strait and a handful of Atlantic corridors, and landings cluster on a few beaches. Cut several systems in one corridor — by accident or otherwise — and whole regions feel it, which is why navies and regulators now treat cable protection as critical-infrastructure policy.
Ownership has shifted beneath the story: the biggest new systems are increasingly financed by the large cloud and content platforms rather than telecom consortia, vertically integrating the internet from data centre to seabed.
It adds up to an uncomfortable truth for a wireless-feeling world: the internet is a maritime infrastructure, with maritime vulnerabilities — and the countries mapping, protecting and building cables are quietly deciding who stays connected on bad days.
